Damascus – The Russian Embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus was hit by mortar shells on Wednesday, eyewitnesses and officials reported.
Syrian rebel fighters hit the Russian Embassy with several mortar shells.
“At least one shell fell in the garden of the embassy, while others hit the building from outside, without causing any casualties,” media activist Firas Hamo told ARA News in Damascus.
The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the attack in a statement on Wednesday evening.
“The terrorist attack was an attempt by some radical groups to foil our efforts to reach a peaceful solution to the Syrian conflict,” it said.
The ministry also said that “some terrorists based near Damascus” are threatening the lives of Russian employees working at the embassy.
Syrian opposition activist Sherwan Khalil said that rebel groups will mostly intensify anti-Russia attacks in Syria.
“Russia will pay the bill for supporting Assad regime in massacring the Syrian people,” Khalil told ARA News. “Russian facilities, forces and employees will become a direct target for the rebel groups, especially after the fall of Aleppo.”
